How Often Should You Replace Your Zip HydroTap Filter? (And How to Do It)

If you rely on a Zip HydroTap in your kitchen or office for instant boiling, chilled, or sparkling water, you know how convenient high-quality water on demand can be. But to keep your tap running smoothly, protect its internal heater and chiller mechanisms, and ensure your water tastes crisp and clean, regular maintenance is essential.

In this guide, we’ll cover how often you need to replace your filter, signs it’s time for a new cartridge, and why using genuine Zip replacement parts matters.

How Long Does a Zip 93701 Filter Last?

As a general rule, Zip Water recommends replacing your residential HydroTap filter every 12 months or once it reaches its rated capacity of 4,163 liters, whichever comes first.

However, your exact replacement schedule depends on a few key factors:

  • Water Usage: High-traffic household or commercial kitchens consume filter capacity faster.
  • Local Water Quality: Areas with hard water or high sediment levels may clog the filter mesh sooner.
  • System Usage: Boiling and sparkling systems put more demand on filtration to prevent limescale buildup.

3 Signs Your Zip HydroTap Needs a New Filter

Your Zip HydroTap system will alert you when it’s time for a change, but you should also watch out for these physical indicators:

  1. The Filter Indicator Light Flashes: Modern HydroTap command centers feature a built-in filter monitor that flashes white or red when the cartridge hits capacity or 12 months of use.
  2. Reduced Water Flow: If chilled or boiling water starts pouring noticeably slower than usual, sediment has likely restricted the 0.2-micron filtration mesh.
  3. Change in Taste or Odor: A faint chlorine smell or off-taste indicates the active carbon inside the cartridge is exhausted and no longer absorbing impurities.

Why Choose the Zip MicroPurity 0.2 Micron Filter?

Not all water filters are created equal. The Zip MicroPurity 93701 Filter Cartridge is engineered specifically for Zip HydroTap residential systems (manufactured from February 2017 onwards).

Here’s why sticking with original OEM filters is critical for your tap:

  • Triple-Action Microfiltration: Rated at 0.2 microns, it filters out sediment, rust, dirt, chlorine, bad tastes, and odors.
  • NSF 42 & 53 Certified: Independently tested and certified to reduce lead, cryptosporidium, and giardia cysts down to microscopic levels.
  • Integrated Antimicrobial Protection: Naturally occurring antimicrobial technology within the carbon core prevents internal bacteria growth over time.
  • Scale Reduction: Protects the sensitive internal boiling tank and heating elements from destructive mineral scale deposits.

  2. Select Filter Change Mode: On the touch screen, go to Menu > Settings > Filter Change and select Filter Flush/Change.
  3. Remove the Old Cartridge: Press the lever on the filter head, rotate the filter cartridge a quarter-turn to the left, and pull down gently. (Keep a towel handy for minor drips).
  4. Install the New Cartridge: Remove the protective cap from your new Zip 93701 Cartridge, insert it vertically into the head, and rotate it a quarter-turn to the right until it locks securely into place.
